I have a passion for technical things and delight in finding out how everything works. I am an active amateur radio license holder and enjoy operating radio transceivers and related equipment on allocated amateur service bands. There are many facets to ham radio with a diverse range of technologies and equipment to experiment with. There is a plethora of different modes and methods available with new ones being developed constantly so there is always something new to try. I derive much enjoyment from bringing together old and new technologies that may have been designed decades apart and finding out how to make them work together. I use a growing range of network assisted communications modes and modern devices, many of which were never intended for amateur radio use but have become very useful for particular types of operation. I still love the challenge of using a basic station with a battery, an old analogue transceiver and a simple wire antenna running low power on HF bands, that is where 'the magic of radio' is still alive and kicking.

I have been a cyclist ever since I could balance on two wheels and have spent most of my life riding, designing, fabricating and repairing bikes for myself and others. Although I no longer take part in competitive cycling I have many good memories, and the usual scars and old injuries from my younger days racing various types of bikes. Over the past 45+ or years I have taken part in freestyle BMX, trials, track racing, speedway, cross country, downhill and dirt jumping events. I still enjoy mountain biking and riding 'Fat Bikes' I do try my best to keep both wheels on the ground but sometimes I just can't stop myself grabbing some air off anything that looks like it could be used as a 'kicker'. As soon as I get on a Fat-Bike it makes me feel like a big kid on a BMX again.
I do have to be a little more reserved these days as I don't bounce as readily as I used to but sometimes the temptation to 'Huck It' or 'Send It' takes over from Self Preservation. |
